She went from being a young woman who was at the mercy of the king and her cousin, to a person who was decisive and in control. This was a turning point in Esther’s life. She asked the Jews to fast and pray for her. Both of them could have been killed.įinally, Esther decided to help, although death was a real possibility for her. You have to remember, neither Mordecai or Esther knew how the story was going to end. But Mordecai saw that Esther might be God’s instrument of salvation for the Jews. He promised to do it in the Old Testament. Who knows if perhaps you were made queen for just such a time as this?” If you keep quiet at a time like this, deliverance and relief for the Jews will arise from some other place, but you and your relatives will die. If a person came before the king unannounced, they would be executed unless the king raised his golden scepter.Įsther 4:13-14 Mordecai sent this reply to Esther: “Don’t think for a moment that because you’re in the palace you will escape when all other Jews are killed. Mordecai believed that Esther can help, but she was afraid to go before the king. Esther wanted to know what was the matter with Mordecai, and why he was in mourning.
Mordecai and the Jews began to be in mourning because of this decree. Xerxes agreed to this arrangement without hearing the details: like who they were going to kill! So, in about 11 months, the Jews would be killed. He told the king that if he was allowed to kill this group of people, he would take their money and give it to the king. Haman came up with a plan to exterminate the Jews from Persia. He didn’t just hate Mordecai, but all the Jews. Instead, he looked for a way to destroy all the Jews throughout the entire empire of Xerxes.
6 He had learned of Mordecai’s nationality, so he decided it was not enough to lay hands on Mordecai alone. He was the most powerful official in Persia after the king, and he was a pompous jerk!Įsther 3:5-6 When Haman saw that Mordecai would not bow down or show him respect, he was filled with rage. At this point we are introduced to a man named Haman.
